It’s Tough to Change the Minds of ‘Vaccine-Hesitant’ Parents, Study Finds | Health News

(HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 14, 2020 (HealthDay News) — When parents have concerns about the safety of childhood vaccinations, it can be tough to change their minds, as a new study shows.

The study involved “vaccine-hesitant” parents — a group distinct from the staunch “anti-vaxxer” crowd. They have worries about one or more routine vaccines, and question whether the benefits for their child are worthwhile.

Even though those parents are not “adamantly” opposed to vaccinations, it can still be hard for pediatricians to allay their concerns, said Jason Glanz, lead researcher on the study.

So Glanz and his colleagues looked at whether giving parents more information — online material “tailored” to their specific concerns — might help.

It didn’t. Parents who received the information were no more likely to have their babies up to date on vaccinations than other parents were, the study found.

UB’s Daily Health Check is quickly becoming part of everyone’s routine, but a new update introducing text message notifications promises to make the COVID-19 screening tool even more effective and easier to complete. Beginning Oct. 13, members of the UB community who have access to a smartphone are strongly encouraged to enroll their mobile number. By doing so, they will receive automated text reminders to complete the Daily Health Check — delivered right to their phone.

Along with this update, UB has also changed requirements for employees and others who do business with the university. Previously, all UB faculty and staff, except those living outside of New York State, had to complete the Daily Health Check on their workdays. Now, completion is required

Medical Residents Learn To Treat The Growing Health Hazards Of Climate Change

October 12, 2020

| Health Center

It was low tide on the north shore of Boston when Steve Kearns felt the mosquito bite that would land him in a hospital with West Nile Virus disease for a week.

“For at least six months after that, I felt like every five minutes I was being run over by a truck,” Kearns says. “I couldn’t work, I couldn’t walk very well and I couldn’t focus. I wondered for a bit if I’d ever get better.”

Kearns, 71, recounted the experience during a check-up with his physician, Dr. Gaurab Basu, and Dr. Charlotte Rastas, a third year resident in primary care at a Cambridge Health Alliance clinic in Somerville, Mass.

Basu had never seen West Nile in a patient before Kearns. The first reported case in Massachusetts was in 2002. By 2018, the year a mosquito bit Kearns, there were 49.

Act now on wildfires, global climate change, Human health, study says

October 9, 2020

| Global Health

Immediate actions are needed to limit the greenhouse gas emissions that are driving climate change that helps fuel wildfires, a Monash University study says.

A special report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, led by Professor Yuming Guo and Dr Shanshan Li from the Monash School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, summarises the enormous impacts of climate change on wildfire seasons and the sequential increased morbidity, mortality, and mental health impacts.

The report, which analysed numerous studies on wildfires over the past 20 years, says global climate change is fueling the three essential conditions for wildfires – fuel, oxygen and an ignition source. The world is seeing inconsistent rainfall, increased drought and hotter temperatures, leading to more flammable vegetation.

It says the global mean carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from wildfires accounted for about 22 per cent of the carbon emission from burning fossil fuels between 1997-2016. The

Study: Sicker livestock emit more methane, accelerating climate change

October 7, 2020

| Health News

Oct. 7 (UPI) — Warming temperatures may inspire a feedback loop of climate-altering flatulence, according to a new paper published Wednesday in the journal Trends in Ecology and Evolution.

Over the last decade, atmospheric methane concentrations have risen dramatically, and studies suggest livestock and their digestive systems are responsible for roughly half of the increase in methane emissions.

Scientists suggest the problem is likely to get worse as temperatures rise.

According to the new paper, a review of scientific literature on livestock health and methane emissions, rates of parasitic worm and bacterial infections are expected to rise as the planet warms. When cows, sheep and other animals are battling an infection, they emit more methane.

“Some parasitic worms spend part of their life cycle in the external environment — on grass, for example — and temperature can affect the rate at which these parasites develop into a life stage that

Chef Ivy Stark helped change how Americans viewed Mexican food and now she’s onto plant-based eating

October 7, 2020

| Health Food

It’s been more than two decades since chef Ivy Stark showed diners that Mexican food wasn’t simply hard-shell tacos brimming with ground beef or a basket of chips with guac.

With the recent debut of Whole Food Vegetarian Cookbook, her third book, Stark is adding her voice to the growing movement around plant-based diets. But for the chef—who many New Yorkers may know from her time leading the kitchens of Dos Caminos, Rosa Mexicano and El Toro Blanco—it’s not simply a fad. While she doesn’t consider herself a vegetarian or vegan, this book is full of recipes that shows the way Stark has been eating for years.

“I think it’s here to stay. I’ve been amazed at the growth of it,” says Stark about the growing popularity of plant-based eating. “People are looking to eat in a healthier way, but they still want to enjoy their

A mask is adjusted on the first day of school at Northeast Elementary School in Jackson on Tuesday morning, Aug. 25, 2020. The first cohort returned to class Tuesday with the second half of the students returning to class on Thursday.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued an emergency order Monday requiring face coverings in public spaces, restricting gatherings and limiting the capacity of bars and other venues. The order reaffirms a handful of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive orders that were invalidated by the Michigan Supreme Court last week for reasons unrelated to the orders’ ability to prevent COVID-19 spread.

MDHHS Director Robert Gordon said his emergency orders, based on a
