Beyond the Stigma: Mental health challenges at college during a pandemic (Commentary)

October 13, 2020

| Health Issues

Jim Malatras has been the chancellor of the State University of New York system since August 2020. From July 2019 until his appointment as chancellor, he was president of SUNY’s Empire State College.

There is often a lot of pressure and anxiety that comes with being a college student. While mental health issues among college students are not new, the Covid-19 pandemic is exacerbating them. In a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in late June, 63% of 18-to-24-year-olds reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and the prevalence of depression among graduate and professional students is two times higher in 2020 compared to 2019.

But like the great diversity of our students at one of our 64 campuses across the state, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Institutions must enlist health professionals in their community, maximize touchpoints and support layers, mobilize young people who want to

Addressing Nebraska’s rural health care challenges | Articles

October 12, 2020

| Community Health

Rural communities that are vibrant, growing and healthy enjoy a handful of similar resources. One is access to education, and another is access to health care. Ask yourself this question: “Would I move my family to a community that does not meet my needs and expectations as they relate to education and health care?” The answer is no!

Access to health care services is vital to recruit and retain businesses and the jobs they bring. After a great deal of hard work, Gothenburg was able to create the right environment to attract Fortune 500 companies. Access to quality health care services was critical to this process. To many seeking the good life in rural Nebraska, driving 20 miles, instead of 100 for a checkup or procedure, is a deal maker. It means employers seeking to fill jobs can ensure future employees that health care for their families is readily available.

‘It has been something on everyone’s mind’: A public health planner on preparations, challenges in COVID vaccine rollout

October 10, 2020

| Health Center

The race is on to create a COVID-19 vaccine — and when one is finally available, local health officials will be on the front lines of a long chain of logistical challenges as they work to protect the public.

Christopher M. Goshea, the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness Planner for Hampden County, says a main concern involves the preparations needed to immunize local populations against the virus once vaccines are approved for distribution.

The National Governors Association has issued a memo advising governors on how to prepare for immunization against COVID-19 on a mass scale. Massachusetts Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders, who noted the state through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health distributes about 3.2 million vaccine doses every year, said the DPH “has had an internal working group to ensure that we have the infrastructure in place” when a vaccine is ready for distribution.

Clinical Challenges: Managing Hyperkalemia Through Diet

October 8, 2020
| Health Article

It’s one of the biggest conundrums nephrologists face – how to prevent or treat chronic hyperkalemia by managing diet in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Hyperkalemia is the medical term that describes potassium levels in a patient’s blood that are higher than normal. Hence, the traditional recommendation for managing these with patients is to keep them off foods high in potassium.

The problem, as pointed out by Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh, MD, MPH, PhD, chief of nephrology, hypertension, and kidney transplantation at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine, is that potassium is critical to the normal functioning of cells, and ensures the proper functioning of nerves and muscles, including the heart. “So potassium is extremely important,” he told MedPage Today, “And it has been shown to lower blood pressure, lower the risk of stroke and heart disease, and increase longevity.”

According to the National Kidney Foundation, a normal amount

Trump Orders Agencies to Tackle Coronavirus-Related Mental Health Challenges

October 7, 2020

| Health Issues

President Trump issued an executive order on Monday to establish a multi-agency working group to address mental health issues resulting from the novel coronavirus pandemic.

According to a poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation in mid-July, 53% of U.S. adults said their mental health was harmed by worry and stress over the coronavirus, compared to 32% in March. The pandemic and the resulting economic recession have “disproportionately” affected young adults (ages 18-24), racial and ethnic minorities, unpaid adult caretakers and essential workers in terms of mental health challenges, substance abuse and thoughts of suicide, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in September. The president issued the order––that included a “national call to action” to remedy these issues––before leaving Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he was being treated for coronavirus.

“The pandemic has…exacerbated mental and behavioral health conditions as a result of stress

Cope with mental health issues when you work remote.

Working from home has a lot of benefits. Who doesn’t love dressing in sweatpants every day, avoiding the commute and enjoying quality time with their dog? But working from home also has plenty of drawbacks—and some of those are related to a significant negative impact on mental health.

In April, a large study found 75% of people were experiencing social isolation and this was correlated with working from home. The more people worked from home, the more they felt socially isolated. Now, another just-released study is highlighting the same challenges, but with even greater reports of mental health challenges.

The just-released study by Oracle and Workplace Intelligence surveyed 12,000 people across 11 countries and found the following:

  • 78% of the global workforce reported negative impacts to their mental health this year.
  • 42% say their productivity has plummeted.
  • 41% say they

Trump confronts twin challenges: health and credibility

October 7, 2020
| Good Health

All presidents shade the truth or outright lie at times, whether it’s to protect national security or to hide embarrassing personal conduct. But with just four weeks until Election Day, as President Donald Trump himself faces down the coronavirus that has killed 209,000 Americans, a long-building lack of credibility with a majority of the public may be his biggest weakness.

Only 34% of American adults believe President Trump has relayed truthful information about the virus, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken after his own diagnosis was revealed last Friday.

From misstating the crowd size on Inauguration Day to claims that Mexico will pay for a southern border wall, Mr. Trump has racked up thousands of false statements – some obvious exaggerations, others more consequential. The risks may go beyond Mr. Trump’s brand name as a politician – including potentially leading the public not to believe the president during an emergency
