Overnight Health Care: New wave of COVID-19 cases builds in US | Florida to lift all coronavirus restrictions on restaurants, bars | Trump stirs questions with $200 drug coupon plan

COVID-19 infections are on the rise, even as many Americans are back at work and school. Florida is letting restaurants and bars open without restrictions, and Trump’s sudden interest in sending seniors drug coupons is raising all sorts of questions.

We’ll start with the coronavirus big picture:

New wave of COVID-19 cases builds in US

The U.S. has never gotten control over the coronavirus. The pandemic has killed more than 200,000 people in America, but efforts that could slow the spread and truly lower the case count have never been fully embraced. So here we are.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases are rising again in the United States, building a new crescendo

Donald Trump’s Health Care Executive Orders Lack Teeth

September 27, 2020

| Health Current Events

President Donald Trump, who has long promised a “beautiful” and “phenomenal” health care plan, announced a series of largely meaningless actions on Thursday during a speech in North Carolina that effectively served as a campaign event.

The most tangible proposal Trump unveiled was a vow to send $200 prescription drug discount cards to 33 million Medicare beneficiaries “in the coming weeks.” However, the President said the $6.6 billion outlay needed to fund this program would have to come from savings from his “most favored nations” drug pricing proposal, which he announced on Sept. 13, and which experts say would be close to impossible to implement before the November election.

The Trump Administration recently tried and failed to convince the pharmaceutical industry to fund a similar plan, according to the New York Times. It’s unclear if the version announced Thursday will see a different fate.

Trump also announced two non-binding

President Donald Trump will lay out his vision for health care in the coming two weeks, the White House claims, after blowing through a number of self-imposed deadlines to produce a long-promised plan to replace the Affordable Care Act.

“The President in the next week or so will be laying out his vision for health care. Some of that has already been put out there — telemedicine and lowering the cost of drugs … and protecting pre-existing conditions. But the President will be laying out some additional health care steps in the coming, I would say, two weeks,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Tuesday when asked if the President’s health care plan exists.

Vice President Mike Pence told CBS News Tuesday that Trump’s health care plan will include taking executive action to guarantee Americans with pre-existing conditions must be covered by health

Fact-checking Trump’s town hall health care claims

September 27, 2020

| Health Facts

President Trump was in the spotlight Tuesday night for a rare town hall in Philadelphia with undecided voters, where he fielded questions on topics including the coronavirus pandemic and health care, which have been on the minds of many voters.

He made a variety of claims about the health care system, health care proposals and the scientific realities of COVID-19. Here are some of the highlights, as well as fact checking and context for his statements.

Mr. Trump repeated a claim Tuesday night he has made in the past — that COVID-19 is “probably going to go away now a lot faster because of the vaccine” but “would go away without the vaccine.”

When ABC News moderator George Stephanopoulos asked the president to clarify if he believes the virus will go away without a vaccine, Mr. Trump responded, “Sure, over a period of time.”

Mr. Trump said in February

Trump’s health care ‘vision’ punts on two major issues

September 27, 2020

President Donald Trump is touting what he calls his health care “vision,” but the executive orders he’s planning to sign Thursday afternoon largely punt on addressing two major issues facing Americans.

The measures, which fall far short of a comprehensive proposal, come less than six weeks before the presidential election and serve as a political play to shore up concerns at a swing state event. Democratic nominee Joe Biden has already committed to making health care a focal point of the rest of his campaign, highlighting Trump’s actions to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and the unprecedented protections the law already provides for people with pre-existing conditions.

The President is also looking to shift attention away from criticism of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. More than 200,000 Americans have died from the virus over the past six months.

The first executive order will state that

Read: How to fix the health gap between Black and white America

These health gaps are not immutable. Concrete changes to public policy, industry practices, and medical education could turn the health-care system into a force for greater equality. Here are five such changes:

First, when states are indifferent to whether their Black and Latino citizens have health coverage, the federal government should step in. According to research published earlier this year, 9 percent of white adults were uninsured in 2018, compared with 14 percent of Black adults and 25 percent of Latino adults. The coronavirus recession is making the coverage gap worse. Already, as many as 12 million Americans have lost insurance sponsored by their employer or a family member’s employer. Black, Latino, and other workers of color have faced especially steep declines in employment.

The Affordable Care Act did reduce disparities in insurance by setting up insurance exchanges
