As Dr. Javaid Perwaiz faces trial, the women he treated question decades of care

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The last time Brittni DuPuy-German saw her trusted gynecologist, she once again explained that the stabbing, mystery pain in her abdomen had not gone away.

It first appeared two years earlier, after she said her doctor, Javaid Perwaiz, surgically tied her tubes. To fix it, he had proposed more surgery — three additional procedures in nine months that she said included a hysterectomy when she was 29. But the pain persisted.

So on Nov. 8, 2019, at his private-practice office, Perwaiz and DuPuy-German discussed the possibility of yet another surgery, she said. He scheduled an ultrasound for just days later, a sign of the efficiency that DuPuy-German had come to expect from her family’s longtime gynecologist. He was her mother’s doctor, her sister-in-law’s doctor, her best friend’s doctor. Perwaiz had delivered DuPuy-German and delivered her children.

Which is why, when her phone buzzed the day after her

The joint venture looks to enhance patient outcomes while reducing overall costs for those who receive and pay for care.

CLEVELAND — University Hospitals has formed a joint venture with ValueHealth LLC, a nationally recognized digital health company empowering consumerism and payment reform, to create a “high-value network of state-of-the-art ambulatory surgical centers.”

This means that UH’s network will be expanding in surgical care with a focus on orthopedic surgery, specifically hip and knee replacements. The facilities will be multi-specialty and may also include clinical services such as pain management, urology, cardiac care, and more.

ValueHealth’s stated expertise and reputation for developing demand matching surgical networks and bundled payment programs will bring enhancements to UH’s facilities while reducing the cost associated with the standard “fee-for-service” model. Executive Chairman John Palumbo said:

“We are pleased to join with UH in expanding value-based care options for the Northeast Ohio community. UH is

Takeaways: Barrett Is Reticent as Dems Focus on Health Care | Political News

By MARY CLARE JALONICK, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett faced her first day’s worth of questions Tuesday from Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and it was a calmer affair than other recent confirmation hearings.

With public attendance limited by the coronavirus pandemic and Democrats staying focused on a health care message just three weeks ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election, the back and forth was serious, disciplined and mostly uninterrupted — save a few technical glitches from those participating virtually.

But similar to past hearings, Barrett avoided taking positions on a variety of subjects and rulings, saying it would be inappropriate to do so.

Takeaways from day two of the confirmation hearing:

PROHIBITED FROM EXPRESSING VIEWS

Barrett repeatedly declined to give her personal views, or to preview how she might rule, on key issues that could become before the court.

Black Belt counties have less physical access to health care in Alabama.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama’s Black Belt counties have less physical access to health care options and the state overall is suffering poor health outcomes, according to a recent report released by the University of Alabama’s Education Policy Center.

The EPC’s definition of the Black Belt includes 24 counties, and Monday’s report, “Health Care: A Key Challenge in Alabama’s Black Belt,” said 17 of them have fewer than the statewide average of 3.9 hospital beds per 1,000 people.

Four Black Belt counties, Lamar, Lowndes, Perry and Pickens, don’t have any hospitals.

“These data suggest that the Black Belt is largely underserved in terms of health care,” the report says. “Specifically, it indicates that Black Belt residents lack physical access to health care, i.e. the nearest hospital or

The Dalio Center for Health Justice, a research and advocacy organization, was launched on Tuesday as the result of a $50 million grant from Dalio Philanthropies with the goal of reducing health disparities that disproportionately affect communities of color.

“Our goal is to contribute to equal healthcare and equal education because we believe that these are the most fundamental building blocks of equal opportunity and a just society,” Dalio, founder of Dalio Philanthropies and New York-Presbyterian Trustee, said in a statement.

“We know that these don’t adequately exist, and we are excited to have a great partner in NewYork-Presbyterian,

Washington

Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett will face senators’ questions over her approach to health care, legal precedent, and even the presidential election during a second day of confirmation hearings on track to lock in a conservative court majority for years to come.

The mood is likely to shift to a more confrontational tone as Judge Barrett, an appellate court judge with very little trial court experience, is grilled in 30-minute segments Tuesday by Democrats gravely opposed to President Donald Trump’s nominee, yet virtually powerless to stop her rise. Republicans are rushing her to confirmation before Election Day.

“This should not be President Trump’s judge,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Democrats say the winner of the presidential election should choose the nominee.

“This should be your judge,” she said.

Judge Barrett presented her approach to the law as conservative and fair on

Regardless of political party, elections weigh on many Americans, and with long-lasting coverage, it can be difficult to escape the political noise. A Baylor College of Medicine expert offers advice to those experiencing distress throughout election season.

“There is uncertainty with change,” said Dr. Eric Storch, professor and vice chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and vice chair of psychology in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor. “People worry about how their lives will change depending on the election results or that the elected individual may not represent them or their values – this can heighten feelings of distress throughout the election.”

Keeping up with your mental health is crucial if you feel triggered by political events. If you’re experiencing heightened levels of stress due to the election, try to address those feelings by being an active participant in the political process:

WASHINGTON (CN) — Democrats drilling Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett buckled down Tuesday on their warnings that Republicans are commandeering the high court to overturn the landmark health care legislation that protects those with preexisting conditions, among the 7 million Americans who contracted Covid-19 this year.

In lockstep, the Senate minority has defined Barrett as a President Donald Trump’s pick to overturn the Affordable Care Act by giving the Supreme Court a 6-3 conservative majority in time for a hearing next month where the Justice Department backs conservative states fighting the ACA.

Before Trump nominated Barrett to the Seventh Circuit in 2017, the longtime professor had criticized Chief Justice John Roberts for pushing the Affordable Care Act “beyond its plausible meaning to save
