Canada’s Halloween Is Not Canceled, but a Hockey Stick Could Come in Handy | World News

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canadian children can go trick-or-treating on Halloween despite being in the middle of a second wave of COVID-19, the country’s top health officials say, as long as they practice physical distancing, wear masks and wash their hands.

In Canada as in the United States, Halloween brings armies of children dressed in spooky costumes out onto the streets in search of candy and maybe a fright or two.

For parents, this year’s Halloween is truly a scary prospect, however, as coronavirus case numbers climb. Canada recorded 975 new infections on Monday, and the prime minister warned last week that the country is at a “tipping point” in its battle against a second surge.

“We can have Halloween… It’s possible to give and receive candy safely,” Dr. Howard Njoo, Canada’s deputy chief public health officer, told a news conference on Tuesday.

“There are some really interesting ideas where people

The Latest: 2nd presidential debate is officially canceled

October 10, 2020

| Health Current Events

WASHINGTON — The Latest on the 2020 presidential campaign (all times local):

6:35 p.m.

The second presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden is officially off.

The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates confirmed Friday that the Oct. 15 faceoff would be scrapped. The decision was made a day after the commission announced the debate would take place “virtually” because Trump had contracted the coronavirus.

Trump balked at holding the debate in that format, and Biden scheduled a town hall with ABC News for that night once Trump said he would not participate.

Trump’s team later countered with a call to hold the debates as scheduled once the president’s doctor said he would be cleared to hold public events beginning on Saturday.

But the commission said it would not reverse its decision not to have the candidates on stage together, citing an abundance of caution with health concerns

Washburn canceled spring break. Students say ‘blindside’ decision is a blow to mental health – News – The Topeka Capital-Journal

| Community Health

Following a decision to cancel Washburn University’s spring break next semester, students are urging the university’s administration to reconsider their decision, saying student voices were left out of the calendar process.

In a message to the university community late last week, JuliAnn Mazachek, vice president for academic affairs, announced that after a recommendation from the university’s academic calendar committee, Washburn was making the “difficulty decision” to remove the weeklong break from the spring 2021 semester.

With the change, students would return as scheduled on Jan. 16 but would go through 15 uninterrupted weeks of classes, with finals week scheduled a week earlier between May 1 and 7. Washburn officials said the change would help minimize COVID-19 transmission by reducing student travel.

“As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow both nationally and in our state, it is incumbent upon the university to design an academic schedule that minimizes opportunity

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – To help keep the community safe during the pandemic, Med Center Health is canceling the January 2021 Health & Wellness Expo. The unpredictability of COVID-19 and the proven danger of large, social gatherings have shown that hosting an indoor event is not in the best interests of keeping residents of Warren and surrounding counties healthy. At this time, there are no plans to reschedule the Expo in 2021.

Med Center Health plans to resume hosting the Health & Wellness Expo in 2022.

Every year, the Expo attracts hundreds of people to take advantage of free health screenings and information from local health providers. Med Center Health’s Community Wellness offers many screenings throughout the year. Learn more by calling 270-745-0942.

World Ag Expo canceled, latest Valley event put off because of coronavirus pandemic

| Health Current Events

Organizers of the World Ag Expo, the largest farm technology and equipment show of its kind in the world, announced Monday that the 2021 event has been canceled because of the prospect of the novel coronavirus.

It’s the first time in more than 50 years that the show, held each February at the massive International AgriCenter in Tulare, has been scrubbed. The 2020 edition was the 53rd annual event.

“After working with the Tulare County Health Department and other officials, it has become evident that given health and safety restrictions from the State of California, holding a live, international event is not responsible in February,” International AgriCenter CEO Jerry Sinift said in a statement Monday announcing the cancellation.

It’s not uncommon for the show to confront rainy weather that can turn the showgrounds into a mud- and puddle-studded venue for both exhibitors and visitors.

But the virus – which
