Hub International Buys Canadian Benefits Consultancy Firm, Clearpoint

Hub International Ltd., a Chicago-based global insurance broker, announced it has acquired Canadian benefits firm, Clearpoint, which comprises Clearpoint Advisory Group Inc., Clearpoint Retirement Solutions Inc. and Canwest Group Benefits Inc.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, with additional locations in Grande Prairie and Fairview, Clearpoint is a benefits and retirement consulting firm that provides strategic group benefit advisory services and retirement solutions to employers.

“Clearpoint is a great addition to our employee benefits and retirement team,” said David Moon, president and CEO of Hub International Canada West (Hub Canada West). “Their experience and depth of expertise will complement our existing capabilities, expand our services and drive continued growth.”

The principals of Clearpoint, Darren Smith, Sid Swick and Jim Yih, will join Hub Canada West and report to Kevin Rome, president of Employee Benefits for the region.

Bristol Myers Squibb buys biopharma company MyoKardia for $13B

Oct. 5 (UPI) — Bristol Myers Squibb said Monday it will buy biopharmaceutical company MyoKardia for $13 billion, its second large acquisition in two years.

MyoKardia, which develops therapies for serious cardiovascular diseases, produces mavacamten, a potential medicine to treat the chronic heart disease obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

“We are further strengthening our outstanding cardiovascular franchise through the addition of mavacamten, a promising medicine with the potential to address a significant unmet medical need in patients with cardiovascular disease,” Bristol Myers Squibb CEO Dr. Giovanni Caforio said in a statement.

MykoKardia CEO Tassos Gianakakos said the company was created eight years ago to address serious cardiovascular disease with “bold and innovative science.” Since then, he said, it’s produced treatments to help heart function after illness.
