| Health Article

In the battle against COVID-19, another test just got an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).

On Friday, October 2, Quidel (QDEL) announced that its Sofia 2 Flu + SARS Antigen FIA test, or the ABC test (flu A and B, and COVID-19) had been granted EUA.

Writing for Raymond James, analyst Andrew Cooper isn’t surprised by the timing, as the company has been confident about having the product ready to go in time for the respiratory season. It should be noted that distributors would have been expected to start building up stock around this point in the year in preparation for the flu season.

As for the test’s performance, it was “largely within the realm of expectations for each pathogen as well, with COVID-19 positive percent agreement of 95% and negative percent agreement of 100% but flu A and flu B sensitivity/specificity of 90%/95% and 89%/96% respectively.”

In 2015, researchers began noticing that a drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes, empagliflozin, came with the added benefit of decreasing hospitalization for heart failure and death from cardiovascular causes in those patients.

“It was very unexpected, because this drug is targeted and marketed for Type 2 diabetes, not heart failure,” said Kim Ho, a pediatrics Ph.D. student in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and recipient of the 2020 Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship, one of the most prestigious awards for University of Alberta doctoral students.

“It was just such a huge finding, but how is this drug that works in the kidneys helping the heart?”

One of the leading theories, according to Ho, was that the diabetes drug increased ketone levels.

Ketone increases are more widely associated with a fad diet born out of an effective treatment for epilepsy—a high-fat, low carbohydrate food

By Kelly Greenwood

My first grade son is already learning about mental health and wellbeing—as evidenced by his recent (at home) schoolwork.  If today’s employees had had this same early exposure, workplaces would be much more mentally healthy, authentic, and better equipped to provide support during these trying times.

  • Consumers with household incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, or up to $104,800 for a family of four in 2020, may qualify for this additional aid.
  • People who exceed the threshold by even a dollar must repay the subsidy, which is known as a recapture of the credit. This can add thousands of dollars to a household’s tax bill
