Extra Safety Scrutiny Planned as Virus Vaccine Worries Grow | Business News

By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP Medical Writer

Facing public skepticism about rushed COVID-19 vaccines, U.S. health officials are planning extra scrutiny of the first people vaccinated when shots become available — an added safety layer experts call vital.

A new poll suggests those vaccine fears are growing. With this week’s pause of a second major vaccine study because of an unexplained illness — and repeated tweets from President Donald Trump that raise the specter of politics overriding science — a quarter of Americans say they won’t get vaccinated. That’s a slight increase from 1 in 5 in May.

The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found only 46% of Americans want a COVID-19 vaccine and another 29% are unsure.

More striking, while Black Americans have been especially hard-hit by COVID-19, just 22% say they plan to get vaccinated compared with 48% of white Americans, the AP-NORC poll

The World Bank has approved $12 billion in financing to help developing countries buy and distribute coronavirus vaccines, tests, and treatments, aiming to support the vaccination of up to 1 billion people.

The $12 billion “envelop” is part of a wider World Bank Group package of up to $160 billion to help developing countries fight the COVID-19 pandemic, the bank said in a statement late Tuesday.

The World Bank said its COVID-19 emergency response programs are already reaching 111 countries.

Citizens in developing countries also need access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, it said.

“We are extending and expanding our fast-track approach to address the COVID emergency so that developing countries have fair and equal access to vaccines,” said the bank’s president, David Malpass, said in the statement.

“Access to safe and effective vaccines and strengthened delivery systems is key to alter the course of the pandemic and help

Allscripts (NASDAQ:MDRX) announced today the execution of a definitive agreement to sell its CarePort Health (“CarePort”) business to WellSky Corp., a global health and community care technology company. WellSky is jointly owned by two of the world’s largest private equity firms, TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners.

CarePort solutions assist hundreds of hospitals and thousands of post-acute care providers to efficiently coordinate and transition patients through different settings of care.

Allscripts to sell CarePort Health business for $1.3 billion

October 13, 2020
| Health Magazine

Allscripts Healthcare Solutions is selling its care coordination subsidiary CarePort Health to WellSky, the companies said Tuesday.

WellSky, a company that develops software tools for post-acute care providers, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire CarePort for $1.35 billion, representing more than 13 times CarePort’s revenue over the last 12 months and roughly 21 times the company’s adjusted earnings before interest, taxes and amortization.

CarePort represents roughly 6% of Allscripts’ revenue.

Allscripts and WellSky, which is owned by private-equity firms TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners, expect the sale to close before year-end.

WellSky officials said buying CarePort, which connects acute and post-acute care providers and payers, will better position the company to manage the acute-care discharge process, as well as tracking for patients across post-acute care settings.

Under the agreement, CarePort’s customers and employees will transition to WellSky.

“Together with CarePort, WellSky will establish new, meaningful connections

New financial benefits give small business employees early wage access

October 13, 2020

Mandatory quarantines and business closures during the coronavirus pandemic have taken aparticularly large financial toll on small businesses, forcing many employers to reduce wages and health coverage.

Sixty-five percent of small businesses said they were either extremely concerned or very concerned about how the coronavirus will affect their business, according to a survey by Freshbooks. In addition to financial pressure, small business employers are also tasked with providing benefits that will support struggling employees.

“COVID-19 just exacerbated what was going on in the market and put even more pressure on small companies and their employees,” says Emily Ritter, head of product marketing at Gusto, a payroll and employee benefits platform for small businesses. “Employees across America are living paycheck-to-paycheck and the stress of that can be expensive for households.”

Gusto has launched a new set of health and financial wellness benefits to provide employees with early access to

2nd COVID-19 Vaccine Trial Paused Over Unexplained Illness | Business News

October 13, 2020

| Health News

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — A late-stage study of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate has been paused while the company investigates whether a study participant’s “unexplained illness” is related to the shot.

The company said in a statement Monday evening that illnesses, accidents and other so-called adverse events “are an expected part of any clinical study, especially large studies,” but that its physicians and a safety monitoring panel would try to determine what might have caused the illness.

The pause is at least the second such hold to occur among several vaccines that have reached large-scale final tests in the U.S.

The company declined to reveal any more details about the illness, citing the participant’s privacy.

Temporary stoppages of large medical studies are relatively common. Few are made public in typical drug trials, but the work to make a coronavirus vaccine has raised the stakes on these kinds of

The Latest: UK Told It’s at ‘Tipping Point’ in Virus Fight | Business News

| Health Current Events

LONDON — One of the main medical advisers to the British government has warned that the country is at a “tipping point” in its battle against the coronavirus pandemic, a day before Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to announce fresh lockdown restrictions for virus hot spots in the north of England.

England’s deputy chief medical officer, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, said in a statement that the country is at a “tipping point similar to where we were in March.”

The U.K. has experienced Europe’s deadliest outbreak with more than 42,750 deaths.

Van-Tam laid out his hope that history won’t repeat itself in light of better testing and treatments, as well as greater knowledge of the virus itself.

Johnson is on Monday expected to impose additional restrictions in areas where the virus has been spreading fastest in recent weeks. Pubs and restaurants in northern cities like Liverpool for example are expected
