Health advisory issued for Cascade Reservoir due to harmful algae bloom

A recent water sample shows cyanobacteria are present, and they can be harmful to pets and humans.

CASCADE, Idaho — Health officials are warning recreationists about using Cascade Reservoir due to the presence of a harmful algae bloom in the water.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has been monitoring the reservoir and says a recent water sample shows that concentrations of a toxin-producing cyanobacteria are present. These type of bacteria can be harmful to humans and pets.

Central District Health and DEQ have issued a health advisory for reservoir users.

Cyanobacteria are a natural occuring in bodies of water, however when temperatures rise, their populations can bloom and toxic chemical compounds, or cyanotoxins, can be released into the water.

Algae blooms may look like mats, foam, spilled paint, or surface scum, and have a foul odor. They can move around to different areas, water depths and change in severity.

Public Health Closes Palmer Lake Due To Toxic Algae Bloom

GIG HARBOR, WA — The Tacoma – Pierce County Health Department has closed Palmer Lake on Key Peninsula after an algae bloom turned the water toxic.

Earlier, the county health department had issued a caution advisory, simply telling residents to stay away from parts of the lake that had visible algae.

However, experts ran a routine check to see if conditions had improved Monday, and when results came back Thursday, they showed the lake had high levels of toxins. As a result, public health has closed the lake to all visitors.

The lake will remain closed for at least two weeks, though crews will return to test the water again next week. The results of that test will determine if the bloom remains, and when the lake might be reopened to the public.

Bloom 206 Prioritizes Mental Health and Wellness

In this time of remote learning, virtual classrooms, and a completely new way to receive an education, Bloom Township High School District 206 has put the mental, social and emotional well-being of students at the forefront.

The 2020-2021 school year started with a series of virtual parent and student events that have helped support the overall well being of students. This included guiding families through a clear understanding of remote learning, hosting parent-teacher engagement opportunities, and providing a Journey to College Night for our seniors.

In addition to these supports, teachers are facilitating live remote instruction from their classrooms, which provides consistent teacher to student interface, where the social and emotional needs of students can be assessed. Finally, families can seek support as needed through the growing well of mental health and wellness resources
