Black children twice as likely to die after surgery than White children

October 6, 2020

Black children are more than twice as likely as White kids to die from surgical complications, and minority children are about half as likely to even have surgery as white children, two new studies show.

In one study, researchers found that of nearly 277,000 children who had inpatient surgery between 2012 and 2017, 10,425 suffered a complication that required follow-up surgery and 209 subsequently died.

Of those deaths, 135 patients were White — 1.6% of all White children who suffered a complication — and 74 were Black — 3.7% of all Black children who suffered a complication.

“We don’t fully understand all of the issues that place a Black child at greater risk and how all of these issues interact with each other,” said study author Dr. Brittany Willer, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, in Columbus, Ohio.

“Our study gives physician anesthesiologists and surgeons insight into those at

October 5, 2020

| Health Magazine

Black and Hispanic women around the country are fighting a silent battle of anxiety, stress, isolation and depression.

The coronavirus pandemic is disproportionately affecting the Black community, with 31 percent of Blacks personally knowing someone who had died of COVID-19, compared to 9 percent of white people, according to a poll conducted by the Washington Post. Meanwhile, Black women are nearly twice as likely as white men to have been laid off, furloughed or had their hours or pay reduced because of the pandemic, according to a study by the Economic Policy Institute. They are also more likely than white workers to work outside the home as an essential worker. Couple this with the #BlackLivesMatter movement that’s casting a glaring spotlight on racial injustice across the country, and we’ve got a recipe for a mental health crisis.

Coal CEO requests health benefits for black lung disease he opposed

October 2, 2020

| Health Benefits

Robert Murray, a coal CEO who for decades ran the nation’s largest privately held coal mining company, has filed to obtain benefits from the Labor Department for black lung disease, according to a report from The Ohio Valley Resource and West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPR).

The request is notable because Murray, the former CEO and president of Murray Energy, for years opposed regulations aimed at making mining safer for workers, and that were intended to prevent people from getting the disease.

Ohio Valley Research, which is a regional journalism collaborative that is supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, reported that Murray has submitted the initial paperwork to the federal government to obtain worker compensation benefits for black lung.

“I founded the company and created 8,000 jobs there until the move to end coal use. I am still chairman of the board,” he wrote on his application. “We’re in bankruptcy,

California enacts measures to reduce Covid rates in Latino, Black, Pacific Islander communities

October 2, 2020

| Health News

LOS ANGELES—California will begin to require counties to bring down coronavirus infection rates in disadvantaged communities that have been harder hit by the pandemic, a move that could slow the methodical reopening of the nation’s most populous state.

The complex new rules set in place an “equity metric” that will force larger counties to control the spread of COVID-19 in areas where Black, Latino and Pacific Islander groups have suffered a disproportionate share of the cases because of a variety of socioeconomic factors.

“We can’t allow transmission rates to be so disproportionately impacting those communities without significant effort to really reduce that disparity and reduce the burden on those communities,” Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state’s health secretary, said Thursday.

The measure could further put the brakes on the state’s conservative approach to a return to business as usual after a more rapid reopening of a larger segment of the economy

U.S. coal baron Robert Murray, whose company Murray Energy filed for bankruptcy last year, has applied for federal benefits to treat his black lung disease after opposing more stringent coal dust regulations for years, according to report by West Virginia public radio.

Murray, an ally of President Donald Trump, filed a claim with the Department of Labor seeking to access federal benefits to treat his disease, which is caused by prolonged exposure to coal dust, Ohio Valley ReSource – a National Public Radio affiliate, reported on Thursday.

Reuters could not independently confirm the report.

The news outlet said Murray wrote in his filing for benefits from the fund that he is heavily dependent on an oxygen tank and is “near death”. Murray said he is entitled to benefits after working in underground mines for 63 years.

Murray’s company was one of several coal companies that provided collateral to self-insure their

Robert Murray ran the biggest private coal company in the US for decades and rejected regulations designed to prevent workers from getting the disease.

In his application with the US Department of Labor he says he is now heavily dependent on oxygen and “near death”, according to ABC News.

Mr Murray, 80, is the former CEO and president of now-bankrupt Murray Energy.

“I founded the company and created 8,000 jobs there until the move to end coal use. I am still chairman of the board,” he wrote on a Labor Department obtained by the Ohio Valley ReSource.
