NBC Says Trump Will Hold Town Hall Meeting Thursday, Competing Against Biden

October 14, 2020

President Trump may not be debating Joseph R. Biden Jr. on the same stage on Thursday night as originally planned. But the two candidates will still face off head-to-head.

NBC News confirmed on Wednesday that it would broadcast a prime-time town-hall-style event with Mr. Trump from Miami on Thursday at 8 p.m. Eastern, with the president fielding questions from Florida voters.

The event will directly overlap with an already-scheduled ABC televised town-hall meeting with Mr. Biden in Philadelphia, which will begin at the same time.

Mr. Biden’s town hall has been on the books since last week, after Mr. Trump, who had recently contracted the coronavirus, rejected plans to convert the second formal presidential debate into a virtual matchup; the debate was eventually canceled.

The NBC event, to be moderated by the “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, had been contingent on the Trump campaign providing independent proof that the president

What Do Americans Think Is Broken In Health Care? What Trump And Biden Would Do About It

October 14, 2020

| Health Plans

Our broken health care system has been a campaign talking point for generations, and 2020 is no exception. But what do people think is broken? What does your average worker, parent, student, or small business owner want fixed? My organization, the Foundation for Government Accountability wanted to know the answer to these questions.

When you ask more than 10,000 Americans in focus groups and polling what they want fixed in health care, you get some interesting and unexpected answers. The answers varied, but two themes were overwhelmingly represented: Health care remains top of mind for many Americans and they want more affordable coverage options.

President Trump’s Actions On Health Care

To his credit, President Trump has focused on how to address these concerns despite the Senate’s failure to pass health care reform early in his term. Without legislation to make broader health care changes Americans need,

Minnesota health officials connect COVID-19 cases to Trump, Biden campaign events

October 14, 2020

| Health Current Events

Minnesota health officials said Monday that they have connected more than two dozen coronavirus cases to Trump and Biden campaign events in the state.

Sixteen cases have been tied to a Bemidji outdoor airport rally the president hosted Sept. 18, according to state health officials. Of these, four were reported by protesters at the event, according to state infectious disease director Kris Ehresmann. Ehresmann added that not all of the cases were necessarily contracted at the event.

Officials said three more cases involved people who attended a Sept. 30 Duluth Trump rally, as well as another three tied to attendees of a Sept. 24 Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport event where Vice President Pence appeared. At least one person attended both of those events, and cases tied to the Duluth event were part of the same household, according to Ehresmann.

The state also traced two cases to attendees of Biden campaign

AP FACT CHECK: Sen. Graham and Biden on Obamacare, Barrett

October 14, 2020
| Health Facts

WASHINGTON — The senator leading Supreme Court confirmation hearings Tuesday launched into revisionist history on “Obamacare,” implying it was designed to help Democratic states like California, New York and Massachusetts while doling out less to states like his, South Carolina.

In doing so, Sen. Lindsey Graham skipped over the fact that health insurance is generally more expensive in places with a high cost of living. Also, South Carolina is among 12 conservative states that have not adopted the law’s Medicaid expansion, a big source of federal subsidies.

For their part, Democrats pressed concerns that their presidential candidate also voiced at the start of the hearings — particularly that Amy Coney Barrett on the court would be a sure vote to kill “Obamacare.” That’s not at all certain based on her words in the past. She declared Tuesday: “I’m not here on a mission to destroy the Affordable Care Act.”

Pence says Biden supports abortion ‘up to the moment of birth’ :: WRAL.com

| Health Facts

By Miriam Valverde, PolitiFact reporter

In his debate appearance Oct. 7, Vice President Mike Pence sought to spotlight the difference between the Republican and Democratic candidates over abortion rights.

“I’m pro-life, I don’t apologize for it. This is another one of those cases where there’s such a dramatic contrast,” Pence said in Salt Lake City. “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris support taxpayer funding of abortion all the way up to the moment of birth, late term abortion.”

During the debate, Harris shook her head as Pence made his claim, but she did not directly address his statement. Before his claim, Harris had said she would “always fight for a woman’s right to make a decision about her own body.”

On taxpayer funding, both Biden and Harris say they want to get rid of the Hyde Amendment, a provision routinely added to health budget bills that bars federal funding for abortions.

Fact-check: Biden claims Trump is ‘pushing to slash Medicare benefits’

October 13, 2020

“Donald Trump is lying about Medicare and Social Security. Trump is pushing to slash Medicare benefits.” – Voice-over in new Joe Biden campaign ad, released Oct. 9, 2020

– – –

We were a little surprised when we first saw this ad, as we were unaware of any Trump proposal or policy effort to cut Medicare benefits. There is no citation or explanation given for this claim in the ad, which further puzzled us. Normally, attack ads try to offer verisimilitude by citing news articles or reports.

The explanation from the Biden campaign was also surprising, So let’s explore this claim in detail. It’s an interesting and complex story.

(Note: The ad further makes a Social Security claim that we have previously fact-checked as false. We will keep this fact check focused on the Medicare portion of the ad.)

The Biden campaign explained that this line hinged on the fact

Trump vs. Biden: Where they stand on health, economy, more

October 12, 2020
| Health Issues

WASHINGTON — Amid the tumult of the 2020 presidential campaign, one dynamic has remained constant: The Nov. 3 election offers voters a choice between substantially different policy paths.

President Donald Trump, like many fellow Republicans, holds out tax reductions and regulatory cuts as economic imperatives and frames himself as a conservative champion in the culture wars. The president has offered few details about how he would pull the levers of government in a second term. His most consistent argument focuses on stopping Democratic opponent Joe Biden and his party from pushing U.S. policy leftward.

Biden, for his part, is not the socialist caricature depicted by Trump. But he is every bit a center-left Democrat who frames the federal government as the force to combat the coronavirus, rebuild the economy and address centuries of institutional racism and systemic inequalities. The former vice president and U.S. senator also offers his deal-making past

Biden fans at nation’s largest retirement community

October 12, 2020

| Community Health

THE VILLAGES, Fla. (AP) — Sara Branscome’s golf cart whizzed down the smooth asphalt path that winds through The Villages, the nation’s largest retirement community, an expanse of beautiful homes, shops and entertainment venues that bills itself as “Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.”

Branscome’s cart was festooned with two American flags that flapped in the warm afternoon breeze. A line of oncoming carts bedecked with balloons and patriotic streamers chugged past while honking. Branscome jabbed her left foot on the horn pedal, then gave a thumbs-up.

“This gets you rejuvenated and ready for the next month or so, so we can do this and win. It gives you hope,” the 60-year-old retiree said.

Then she let out a whoop and two surprising words: “Go Biden!”

It’s not a cry that might be expected to resound in The Villages, and it’s certainly not one that is encouraging to President Donald Trump. Older voters

Biden Pitches to Blue-Collar Workers in Pennsylvania

Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic nominee for president, said that his economic plan would raise taxes on the wealthy to create unionized infrastructure jobs and that he would not ban fracking.

“The fact is the president can only see the world from Park Avenue. I see it from Scranton. I see it from Claymont for real. You all know what I’m talking about. You all see it from Erie. That’s why my program to build back better is focused on working people.” “And I’m not going to raise taxes on anybody making less than 400 grand. But, but, you won’t pay a penny more. But those making more than that, I’m going to ask them to finally begin to pay their fair share. I’m going to ask the big corporations and the
