Community ties are key to diversifying participants | Articles

“Researchers think this is a really good thing to have as many diverse patients as possible,” he said. “Hopefully that will continue. That’s where I’m super excited about it.”

For COVID-19, in particular, people who are interested in participating in trials will have plenty of other opportunities, he said. Meridian expects to offer trials for several other vaccines before the end of the year.

The company also is recruiting younger people, down to age 16 for now, for the trials. And dozens more vaccine candidates are in the development pipeline, according to the New York Times vaccine tracker.

The workforce at many meatpacking plants is strikingly diverse — workers may be white, Latino, East African or Southeast Asian, among other groups.

Eric Reeder, president of United Food & Commercial Workers Local 293, sent text messages to an estimated 7,000 workers and put up fliers in several plants and the union

Addressing Nebraska’s rural health care challenges | Articles

| Community Health

Rural communities that are vibrant, growing and healthy enjoy a handful of similar resources. One is access to education, and another is access to health care. Ask yourself this question: “Would I move my family to a community that does not meet my needs and expectations as they relate to education and health care?” The answer is no!

Access to health care services is vital to recruit and retain businesses and the jobs they bring. After a great deal of hard work, Gothenburg was able to create the right environment to attract Fortune 500 companies. Access to quality health care services was critical to this process. To many seeking the good life in rural Nebraska, driving 20 miles, instead of 100 for a checkup or procedure, is a deal maker. It means employers seeking to fill jobs can ensure future employees that health care for their families is readily available.

World Food Program wins for role fighting hunger, violence | Articles

The Nobel Committee said the problem of hunger has again become more acute in recent years, not least because the pandemic has added to the hardship already faced by millions.

WFP estimates that 690 million people worldwide suffer some form of hunger.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was delighted the award went to “the world’s first responder on the front lines of food insecurity.” It was the ninth award for the U.N. or one of its agencies.

“In a world of plenty, it is unconscionable that hundreds of millions go to bed each night hungry,” Guterres said. “Millions more are now on the precipice of famine due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Nobel Committee called on governments to ensure that WFP and other aid organizations receive the financial support needed to feed millions in countries such as Yemen, Congo, Nigeria and South Sudan.

When the award was announced, Beasley

Pelosi plans 25th Amendment panel to review trump’s fitness | Articles

The White House has not said when Trump last tested negative for the virus — which would help pinpoint when he was infected — because that’s his “privatemedical history.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, said two negative PCR tests 24 hours apart are a key factor in determining whether someone is still contagious.

“So, if the president goes 10 days without symptoms, and they do the tests that we were talking about, then you could make the assumption, based on good science, that he is not infected,” Fauci said Thursday on MSNBC.

Pelosi planned to roll out the legislation that would launch the commission for review on Friday. Congress is not in session, so any serious consideration of the measure, let alone votes, is unlikely. But the bill serves as a political tool to stoke questions about Trump’s health during the coronavirus pandemic.

The bill would

That incident, too, began on a weekend. It, too, left doctors and nurses to rely on paper backup systems.

Nebraska Medicine officials said last week that the health system’s emergency rooms had remained open since the outage began early Sept. 20, a Sunday, and no patients had been diverted to other hospitals.

No patients’ electronic medical records were deleted or destroyed, the health system said at the time, thanks to the system’s “backup and recovery processes.”

But when asked whether patients’ medical or financial information had been exposed, a Nebraska Medicine spokesman said the statement the health system provided contained all the information officials could provide.

Nebraska Medicine’s outage also affected hospitals in North Platte, Norfolk, Hastings and Beatrice for which the health system hosts electronic health records systems.

Electronic records at Great Plains Health in North Platte came back over the weekend and were up and running Tuesday with
