PHOENIX, Oct. 12, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Governor Ducey has proclaimed October 11-17, 2020 as Arizona Health Information Exchange (HIE) Week to reaffirm Arizona’s commitment to promoting the secure sharing of electronic health data across a broad spectrum of the state’s healthcare landscape, including health systems and hospitals, labs, community behavioral health and physical health providers, post-acute care and hospice providers, first responders, and many others.

“We’re thankful for this proclamation, as it’s an important recognition of Arizona’s significant efforts over the last 15 years. Ultimately, the success of the HIE reflects the collaborative environment of the state’s healthcare community,” said Melissa Kotrys, CEO of Health Current, Arizona’s designated HIE. “As a result, all healthcare providers have the ability to access more complete patient information for better coordinated care—which is especially important during times of crisis. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the HIE has played a key role in delivering

SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) –The Pinal County Public Health Department has mandated the closure of San Tan Foothills High School after “a cluster” of COVID-19 cases were identified at the school.

According to a statement from the department, the new cases and potential exposures were discovered on Friday, Oct. 9.

“Since then, Public Health Department staff have been working closely with the school and the Florence Unified School District to evaluate the extent of the potential spread,” the statement explains. “After careful consideration, Pinal County Public Health has deemed the school’s onsite closure to begin contact tracing and quarantine as the most critical public health interventions to control an outbreak.”

The department said it will work with the school to contact students and staff who might have been exposed and ask that they quarantine for 14 days. The last known exposure was Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The school

Gilbert believes marijuana poses a threat to health, safety of community | Arizona Politics

| Community Health

GILBERT, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — The Town of Gilbert City Council will hear and consider adopting an ordinance that bans marijuana.

Voters will decide on Proposition 207, which would legalize marijuana in Arizona, but the town wants to create some guidelines for the residents at a council meeting on Oct. 13.

The ordinance indicates Gilbert believes marijuana “poses a threat to the health, safety and security of the community and increases the responsibilities of law enforcement and other Town departments to respond to violations of state and local laws, including building, electrical, plumbing, and fire codes.”

According to town documents, Gilbert “seeks to protect public health, safety, and welfare by prohibiting marijuana establishments and/or marijuana testing facilities in the Town.”

If the ordinance passes, residents will be allowed to use marijuana for personal use, but not in public places.

Marijuana establishments will not be allowed in the town unless the

PHOENIX — The number of Arizona children with health insurance, which had steadily increased over the past decade, has begun dropping again.

A new study shows in 2019, 161,000 Arizona children were uninsured, a 22% increase since 2016.

The report, out today from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, shows Arizona’s 9.2% rate of uninsured kids is fourth-highest in the nation, and almost double the national average.

Zaida Dedolph, director of health policy for the Children’s Action Alliance is concerned the numbers are trending in the wrong direction.

“They’re disappointing, but not surprising, given some of the trends that we’ve seen in the larger health-policy world, basically since 2016,” Dedolp commented. “The Affordable Care Act has been under attack, and people

The COVID-19 pandemic appears to have driven an increase in Arizona deaths, which are up statewide by 22% through August.

When the number of COVID-19 deaths reported by the Arizona Department of Health Services through August are subtracted, Arizona deaths are still up by nearly 10% over the first eight months of the previous year, the data shows.

Year-over-year increases in overall deaths in Arizona typically range between 1% and 4%.

There’s no definitive evidence to explain the excess deaths beyond COVID-19 fatalities in 2020, but there are theories.

Some health experts say that while COVID-19 accounts for a majority of the jump in deaths, excess deaths could be from factors related to the pandemic, including delayed medical care and a general reluctance to go

Republican Sen. Martha McSally and Democratic challenger Mark Kelly met in Phoenix for their first and only debate Tuesday evening, sparring for nearly 90 minutes over health care, immigration and other hot-button issues.

Kelly criticized McSally’s record at every turn, saying she’d jeopardized the health of Arizonans with preexisting conditions and left unemployed workers hanging during the COVID-19 pandemic.

McSally, for her part, endeavored to paint Kelly as a radical leftist with ties to China, questioning his business dealings and slamming him as weak on border security.

But, how accurate were their claims?

Here’s a closer look at what each candidate said Tuesday, with analysis from The Arizona Republic.

Business ties

The claim: McSally said Kelly “sold out to China in multiple business arrangements on his path to get rich quick.” She said she is “standing up to China” while

Obesity In Arizona Could Make Coronavirus Illnesses Worse: CDC

September 27, 2020

| Health

ARIZONA — Obesity not only increases the risk of a severe coronavirus illness, it may triple the risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19, the CDC said. As the BMI increases, so do COVID-19 risks.

In Arizona, 31.4 percent of adults reported they were obese in 2019, according to the new report released Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Our state is not among 12 states where at least 35 percent of adults say they’re obese. The states are Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

In 2018, nine states reported obesity rates above 35 percent.

The 2019 CDC obesity report, based on self-reporting, showed that all states had obesity rates of 20 percent or higher among adults. The lowest obesity prevalence rates were in Colorado and the District of Columbia.

Geographically, the most obese states are located in the
