NASCAR community defends Alex Bowman after media member mocks his anxiety

October 13, 2020

Alex Bowman told his crew he was feeling unwell during Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff race with a spot in the next playoff round in jeopardy.

For most spectators, it was not only understandable for Bowman to have anxiety, but also admirable he was open to sharing it.

One prominent NASCAR media member, though, decided Bowman’s mental health should be joked about. He created an #AnxietyAlex hashtag on Twitter. Each of the three times he used the nickname, the backlash from the racing community grew stronger.

Jim Utter, an editor for Motorsports.com, blocked a wave of critics to his remarks from accessing his account but has left up the tweets for several hours after posting. Utter has more than 60,000 followers on Twitter.

We’ve all done it before. Presented with a new ache, pain or rash, we turn to the internet to find out what’s wrong. Typically, the search results include a myriad of health problems ranging in severity from “it will go away on its own” to “you only have months to live.”

It’s not surprising that these types of searches could make people feel anxious about their health. Now a new body of evidence explains what’s going on.

A systematic review conducted by mental health researchers in Australia looked at the body of evidence on Internet health searches and anxiety.

The authors include 20 studies with more than 7,300 participants in total that explored the relationship between health anxiety and seeking health information online. They found that the internet provides a wealth of health information that can help people to better understand their own health, how to prevent

Mental health support helps USC students cope with stress and anxiety

October 5, 2020

| Health Center

College should be a time when students grow, make new friends and explore their passions. But Americans of college age increasingly report that they feel anxious or lonely — and that was before the upheaval of COVID-19.

USC students can’t hug a friend they see on campus. No longer can they collapse on a couch to share a pizza together or drop by a classmate’s apartment for a Minecraft marathon. University administrators know it hurts, and they understand.

“Many students have shared with us the kinds of reactions they are having: a sense of grief, loss and even frustration,” said Sarah Van Orman, chief health officer for USC Student Health. Safeguarding the physical health of students is important, especially during the pandemic, she said. But USC leaders also are committed to protecting students’ mental and emotional health and helping them build resilience.

That’s why USC students now have 85 psychiatrists,

Your Good Health: Cognitive behavioural therapy effective treatment for anxiety

October 2, 2020

| Good Health

dr_keith_roach_with_bkg.jpgDear Dr. Roach: My mother has been on anxiety medication for one year. Her anxiety level continues to increase to the extent that she is unable to rest. She currently takes 30 mg buspirone daily for anxiety. She is also on 20 mg losartan. She is in otherwise good health. Is there any additional or different medication that you would recommend for her to improve the quality of her life?

D.F.

Anxiety is a condition nearly everybody has to deal with on a frequent basis. The difference in anxiety disorders is that the anxiety is difficult to control, happens more days than not and, most importantly, causes significant distress and impairment. Regular anxiety does not require medication treatment; anxiety disorders often do.

Before discussing alternative medication, I should mention that therapy, especially cognitive behavioural therapy, has been shown to be as effective as medication in treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.

DEAR DR. ROACH: How long do artificial heart valves last? — K.R.

ANSWER: There are two main replacements for a heart valve: mechanical and bioprosthetic. A mechanical valve, also called artificial, is man-made of durable materials, and the bioprosthetic is typically constructed of animal tissue.

Mechanical valves generally last longer than bioprosthetic valves. The durability of bioprosthetic valves depends on age. For patients in their 20s, a bioprosthetic aortic valve has a 50% chance of failure at 15 years, while in a 70-year-old, less than 10% of aortic valves will fail during the same time.

Mechanical valves are expected to last a person’s lifetime, although there have been models of mechanical valves that have developed failures of different components and had to be recalled. Since the mortality rate of the surgery to replace an artificial valve overall is somewhere between 7% and 14%, this presents a major problem.

However, durability

Changing how you inhale and exhale could help reduce coronavirus anxiety

October 1, 2020
| Health

Fear, worry and anxiety during the coronavirus pandemic debilitates your mental and physical health. Amid this growing mental health crisis, some medical doctors are now prescribing a deep breathing technique for patients and physicians alike, nicknamed “box breathing.”

Intentional deep breathing exercises are known to reduce feelings of stress. Experts interviewed by ABC News identify box breathing as a type of breath hold specifically used to overcome the type of anxiety people are experiencing during these distressing times.

Initially honed by elite fighters as a wartime stress-fighting tactic, this breathing technique is now taking hold among health care workers battling the coronavirus pandemic.

Box breathing describes the pattern of inhaling slowly and deeply through your nose to the count of four. You inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, exhale for four seconds and then repeat in four seconds — making a square pattern. Practiced regularly, it has been

Care home workers suffer Covid trauma, anxiety: study

September 30, 2020

| Health

Nearly half of care home workers in northern Italy may be suffering from post-traumatic stress or anxiety following the first wave of the pandemic, new research showed Wednesday.

As Covid-19 began its spread throughout Europe, northern regions of Italy — home to a high proportion of elderly people — were at the frontline as intensive care units were inundated with patients.

While much attention was focused on the physical health of first responders and doctors, far less study has been given over to the mental well-being of the nurses, cleaners and caterers at care homes.

Researchers in Italy and Britain conducted an anonymous survey of more than 1,000 care home workers to check their levels of stress and anxiety after months of caring for sick residents.

They found that 43 percent of respondents passed the symptom threshold for anxiety and PTSD.

“Due to the severity of the situation, we were
