Texas officials say it could take 2-3 months to make water safe after brain-eating amoeba kills 6-year-old

Texas officials on Tuesday said it could take two to three months to disinfect the water in Lake Jackson after a brain-eating amoeba killed a 6-year-old. Officials stressed, however, that becoming infected with the amoeba is rare.

“The path forward for the citizens of Lake Jackson is not going to be one that’s short,” Texas Commission on Environmental Quality executive director Toby Baker said at a press conference. “We have to get through the boil water first, which could take two to three weeks, after that we have to get chlorine levels to a state that can burn the entire system, scour the system, and kill the amoebas. That could take up to an additional 60 days.”

Baker added that the CDC has said it will test the city’s water once the process is complete to make sure it’s safe. He also said agencies will check to make sure

Texas boy’s brain-eating amoeba death leads city to flush water system

A local official in Texas said it will take 60 days to flush out and ensure a drinking water system is safe to use after a 6-year-old boy died from what doctors determined was a brain-eating amoeba, while others pushed back on the notion that the water authority was in some way tied to his death.

“The Brazosport Water Authority was never an issue with Josiah’s passing or an issue of water quality,” Rep. Dennis Bonnen, Texas Speaker of the House, said on Monday, Fox 26 reported.

An investigation into a 6-year-old boy’s death led to the detection of a brain-eating amoeba in a Houston-area city’s water supply, health officials confirmed this weekend. CBS affiliate KHOU-TV reported Josiah McIntyre was hospitalized earlier this month after contracting naegleria fowleri at either the Lake Jackson splashpad or a hose at his family’s home.

CDC preliminary results came back yesterday. 3 of 11 samples were positive: a downtown splash pad, his home’s hose bib and a hydrant. #khou11 https://t.co/rggdGw8LDh pic.twitter.com/iylTXpFc3C

‘Brain-eating’ amoeba in Texas city’s water supply kills 6-year-old

| Health Article

A “brain-eating” amoeba has been found in the water supply of a Texas city where a 6-year-old boy recently died from an infection with the organism, according to news reports.

The boy, Josiah McIntyre, who lived in Lake Jackson, a city near Houston, Texas, died on Sept. 8 of a rare infection with the amoeba, known as Naegleria fowleri, according to NBC News. Naegleria fowleri is naturally found in warm freshwater, such as lakes and rivers, and people usually become infected after swimming or diving in bodies of contaminated freshwater, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Infections, which are rare, happen when contaminated water goes up the nose — you cannot become infected from swallowing contaminated water, the CDC says.

Josiah’s family said he may have been exposed to Naegleria fowleri from either their home’s water hose, or a city “splash pad,” where

Lake Jackson is currently under a boil water notice as state and local officials work to flush and disinfect the city’s water supply.

BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration Sunday for Brazoria County in response to the brain-eating amoeba found in the city water supply for Lake Jackson.

Residents living in the city of Lake Jackson are currently under a “boil water” notice as local and state officials continue to flush and disinfect the water system.

On Saturday, the city’s mayor issued a disaster declaration that activated the local Emergency Operations Center and allowed officials to access additional resources in response.

Abbotts’ order temporarily suspends any state regulatory statues that could prevent or delay necessary action from the state in helping Brazoria County recover from this disaster. It also helps the county receive assistance from any necessary state agencies.

6-year-old boy dies after suffering from brain-eating amoeba

September 27, 2020

The death of a 6-year-old boy who officials said was hospitalized with brain-eating amoeba sparked warnings about a possibly tainted water supply in a suburban Houston community.

Maria Castillo, the mother of Josiah McIntyre, said Saturday her son died Sept. 8 at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston and that doctors told her the cause was brain-eating amoeba.

Hospital spokeswoman Jenn Jacome confirmed his death there but said privacy laws prevented her from discussing the cause.

Related: The boy’s mom said that he might have had a chance if he was diagnosed correctly at the first hospital they visited.

The city of Lake Jackson, Texas, said in a statement Saturday that an unnamed 6-year-old boy had been hospitalized for “a rare and often fatal brain eating amoeba” it identified as naegleria fowleri.

“We are saddened by death of Josiah McIntyre,” Councilman Vinay Singhania said by email. “We are still investigating and

Brain-eating amoeba found in water supply of several Houston-area cities

Eight Texas cities near the Gulf of Mexico have been placed under a ‘do not use water’ advisory

With unrelenting racial tensions, a devastating global pandemic and the threat of financial collapse hovering over the U.S., it would seem that 2020 couldn’t get any worse.

But a new calamity has befallen several cities in Texas’ Greater Houston metropolitan area that are under a “do not use water” advisory due to fears that a deadly brain-eating amoeba is lurking in their tap water.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, is usually found in warm freshwater and soil. It tends to infect people when the contaminated water enters the body through the nose and then travels to the brain where it can cause a rare and debilitating disease called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).
