Dutch PM Orders ‘Partial Lockdown’ To Halt Coronavirus Surge

October 13, 2020

| Health News

The Netherlands will go into “partial lockdown” to curb one of Europe’s biggest coronavirus surges, with all bars, cafes and restaurants to close, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Tuesday.

The sale of alcohol and cannabis will also be banned after 8pm (1800 GMT) in a bid to reduce the social contacts that have led to the rise in Covid-19 cases, Rutte said of the steps.

After long refusing to make the wearing of masks compulsory, Rutte finally ordered that non-medical face coverings must also be worn in all indoor spaces by people aged over 13.

“We are going into a partial lockdown. It hurts but it’s the only way, we have to be stricter,” Rutte told a televised press conference.

“If we do all of this, we can quickly return to a more normal life.”

The rules will take effect at 10pm (2000 GMT) Wednesday and will last for

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett faced her first day’s worth of questions Tuesday from Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and it was a calmer affair than other recent confirmation hearings.

With public attendance limited by the coronavirus pandemic and Democrats staying focused on a health care message just three weeks ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election, the back and forth was serious, disciplined and mostly uninterrupted — save a few technical glitches from those participating virtually.

3 million tested for coronavirus in Chinese city

October 13, 2020

| Health Article

BEIJING — Authorities in the eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao say they have completed coronavirus tests on more than 3 million people following the country’s first reported local outbreak of the virus in nearly two months.

The city’s health department said Tuesday that no new positive cases had been found among the more than 1.1 million test results returned thus far. The city said it had a total of 12 cases, six with symptoms and six without, since the new outbreak was first spotted over the weekend at a hospital.

The National Health Commission, however, said Tuesday that at least six new cases of the virus were found in Qingdao in the past 24 hours.

The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear.

The National Health Commission numbers released Tuesday reported a total of 30 new virus cases in the previous 24 hours nationwide. It broke down those

Many Older Americans With Heart Failure Take 10 or More Meds | Health News

By Cara Roberts Murez

(HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Oct. 13, 2020 (HealthDay News) — When older people hospitalized for heart failure are sent home, they are often given a whopping 10 medications to take for a variety of conditions. But is this “polypharmacy” practice necessary, or does it just place a bigger burden on already frail patients?

It’s not a question so much of the quantity of the medications, but whether the medications patients are taking are the right ones for them, said senior study author Dr. Parag Goyal, a geriatric cardiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian in New York City.

“It’s not just that we’re not starting the right medications, there may be situations where we’re not stopping the wrong medications as well,” Goyal said. “I think we need to look at the medication that older adults with heart failure take in a more holistic fashion.”

For the study, Goyal’s team examined

Traditional Halloween activities such as trick-or-treating will not be cancelled in Tulsa County this year.

“Oh, heck, no,” said Dr. Bruce Dart, executive director of the Tulsa Health Department.

“Halloween is something that can still be fun for kids and families, as long as people follow the same general recommendations of watching your distance, washing your hands and avoiding crowded, indoor events,” Dart said Tuesday during a regular city/county news briefing on COVID-19.

“Frankly, to be honest, I can’t think of a better opportunity to have some fun while wearing a mask,” he said.

However, Dart said it is important for everyone to make modifications, including masks that cover both the nose and mouth.

“A costume mask should not be used unless it is made

As a paramedic, Natalie Glaser has a highly stressful job, with long hours and shift work.

She went to her GP, complaining of an upset stomach.

“I was really scared as well, and I still am scared,” she told PM.

But when the doctor advised her to get a colonoscopy straight away, her anxiety grew further.

“My GP asked me if I’d like to go to the private hospital system or the public, and I took out my HCF cover because I said I’m sure I’m covered for this procedure,” she recalled.

“When I pulled it out and it said I wasn’t covered for it, I was quite confused.”

Natalie Glaser said she lost the majority of her coverage when HCF reviewed her policy and moved her down to a lower-cost, more basic level of coverage.

“I lost 18 out of 25 procedures — that’s about 72 per cent of

James Murdoch, the former CEO of 21st Century Fox and the youngest son of Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch, has admitted that he stepped away from his father’s media empire, in part, because it legitimizes disinformation and obscures facts.

“I reached the conclusion that you can venerate a contest of ideas, if you will, and we all do and that’s important. But it shouldn’t be in a way that hides agendas,” Murdoch told The New York Times in his first major interview since his exit.

In the interview, conducted by Maureen Dowd for a profile published Oct. 10, Murdoch explained why he had “pulled the rip cord” with the family business.

“A contest of ideas shouldn’t be used to legitimize disinformation, and I think it’s often taken advantage of,” he said. “And I think at great news organizations, the
