NoVA Leads In New Cases With Statewide Positive Test Rate At 4.8%

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 736 new coronavirus cases Sunday, down more than 200 cases from Saturday. State health officials also reported 15 new deaths of people with COVID-19. As of Sunday, the seven-day average of new coronavirus cases was 805.

The cumulative total number of cases in Virginia is 146,144 and the cumulative total number of coronavirus-related deaths across the state is 3,159. Hospitalizations increased to 10,889, up from 10,863 reported Saturday.

With a 4.8 percent positive average of PCR tests statewide as of Sept. 23, Virginia remained below the 5 percent rate recommended by the World Health Organization for governments to allow further reopening. At the peak of the pandemic, the percent positive figure in Virginia was more than 20 percent.

Virginia topped the 2 million PCR test mark Sunday as 9,785 new tests were reported by the VDH. A total of 2,003,129 PCR tests have been completed in the state.

Among the new cases reported Sunday, 224 cases were reported in the northern region, 189 in the southwest region, 123 in the central region, 117 in the northwest region and 83 in the eastern region, according to the VDH.

There have been 17,443 total COVID-19 patients discharged from Virginia hospitals to date, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.

As of Sunday, current hospitalizations include 103 COVID-19 patients on ventilators and 198 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use is at 21 percent among all hospital patients, and ICU occupancy is at 72 percent. Virginia’s 2019 average for ICU occupancy was 67 percent. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours.

Among the coronavirus hospitalizations, 228 were reported in the state’s central region as of Sunday followed by 206 in the eastern region, 196 in the northern region, 149 in the southwest region and 89 in the northwest region. As of Sunday, the seven-day average of coronavirus-related hospitalizations was 941.4 people.

  • Alexandria: 3,814 cases, 320 hospitalizations, 69 deaths; increase of 10 cases and one hospitalization

  • Arlington County: 3,951 cases, 498 hospitalizations, 149 deaths; increase of 16 cases

  • Fairfax County: 20,801 cases, 2,153 hospitalizations, 586 deaths; increase of 114 cases

  • Fairfax City: 137 cases, 14 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of one case

  • Falls Church: 70 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes reported

  • Loudoun County: 6,816 cases, 429 hospitalizations, 124 deaths; increase of 24 cases

  • Manassas: 1,920 cases, 128 hospitalizations, 25 deaths; increase of two cases

  • Manassas Park: 612 cases, 54 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of two cases

  • Prince William County: 12,449 cases, 909 hospitalizations, 203 deaths; increase of 55 cases and one hospitalizations

  • Fredericksburg: 539 cases, 49 hospitalizations, five deaths; no changes reported

  • Spotsylvania County: 2,136 cases, 133 hospitalizations, 44 deaths; increase of five cases and one hospitalization
