Nearly 3,000 deaths, 100K cases reported

The Mississippi Department of Health has reported 672 new coronavirus cases and 20 new coronavirus-related deaths Friday.

According to state records, the total number of positive cases in Mississippi stands at 99,558. The total number of deaths is 2,999.

The state’s highest number of deaths reported in a single day was 67 on Aug. 25.

The number of long-term care facility outbreaks stands at 122. The number of cases reported at long-term care facilities is 6,172, according to numbers released Friday. The number of deaths in long-term care facilities is 1,226.

As of Tuesday, the latest information available, 450 people were hospitalized with confirmed infections, with 106 in ICU and 71 on ventilators.

Hinds County continues to have the highest number of reported cases in the state with 7,263, followed by DeSoto County with 5,752, Harrison County with 4,043 and Jackson County with 3,709. Rankin and Madison counties rank fifth and sixth in the state for county-wide infection rates, with 3,419 cases and 3,374 cases, respectively.

Residents between the ages of 25-39 represent the largest portion of the infected population, with 22,778 cases, according to data released Wednesday, the latest data available. Among patients under the age of 18, children between the ages of 11-17 have the highest infection rate, with 6,249 cases identified so far.

People aged 65 and over have the highest hospitalization rate in the state with 3,057 reported Monday. The age group has experienced the highest number of deaths with 2,245 reported so far.

An estimated 89,737 people are presumed recovered from COVID-19 as of Monday. The estimated number of recoveries is updated weekly. A person is presumed recovered if it’s been 14 days since he or she tested positive and was not hospitalized or 21 days if hospitalization was involved.
