Her Wichita food business sells low-cal, healthy meals. His new food business… doesn’t.

They’re known for their business that serves pre-packaged, pre-planned meals that are gluten-free and low cal.

But now, Doug and Kira Watt have started another food business, and this one will appeal to people who are throwing caloric caution to the wind.

The Watts, who together own and run Perfect Plate — a healthy-food business Kira founded in 2018 — have just launched a new food trailer called Watt’s Cooking & Catering.

It’s a pull-behind trailer that will be run by Doug and will serve fair favorites like funnel cakes, chocolate-covered cheesecake, cheeseburgers, fries, fried Oreos, fried candy bars and more.

Doug plans to take it to fairs and festivals all over the region once those are back up and running. In the meantime, he said, he’s also considering parking the trailer on various Wichita street corners to feed people with a fair-food hankering.

So far, he’s set up the trailer in Oxford and in Valley Center.

Doug Watt said he’s been in the fair food business since 1995, but until now, he’s served his food from under tents. He’s owned and run businesses with names like World’s Best Lemonade and Cappuccino Connections

His mother-in-law recently bought a funnel cake cooker from someone selling it online and found out they had a concession trailer to sell, too. She asked Doug and Kira if they were interested.

They’re getting the trailer wrapped with its logo now, having recently settled on its name after polling Facebook friends for suggestions. They’ll keep its whereabouts updated on the trailer’s new Facebook Page.

Doug Watt says his health-conscious wife has been a little concerned that customers might confuse the two businesses. Perfect Plate sells meals from three locations — its flagship at 5255 N. Maize, on the ground level of the Garvey Center at 220 W. Douglas and in Derby from a co-op food business called The Coop.

“I’m kind of the anti-Perfect Plate,” he said with a laugh.
