Several health departments in the Brown County area issued a public health emergency as COVID-19 continues to spread in the region.
Brown County Health and Human Services, De Pere Health Department and Oneida Nation Health Department followed in the footsteps of several Fox Valley health departments in declaring a public health emergency Saturday afternoon. The Fox Valley issued a public health emergency on Friday.
Health department recommendations include closing indoor bars and only allowing take-out, curbside pickup and delivery at restaurants, limiting operations at salons and gyms and offering delivery and pick-up options for retail. Health officials recommend people refrain from gathering indoors. Outdoor gatherings should be limited to 10 people.
“The recent surge in cases has diminished the ability of our collective public health agencies to notify positive cases and their close contacts in a timely manner and hampers our efforts to contain the spread of the virus,” the health departments said in a joint news release. “In turn, hospitals are enacting their emergency plans. Public health implores everyone to take immediate actions to stop this uncontrolled community spread.”
On Friday, more than 200 Green Bay doctors signed a letter pleading with elected officials and the public to take steps to contain the coronavirus as cases continue to increase in Brown County. In the letter, Prevea Health CEO Ashok Rai said health care workers on the front lines of the pandemic are troubled about the recent surge and “tripling of COVID-19-related hospitalizations” since the beginning of September.
The public health emergency also reminds the public to practice social distancing, wear a face mask, wash hands frequently, limit gatherings and self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19. Those who feel sick should talk with their doctor about getting a COVID-19 test and those who test positive should notify people they had close contact with.
