FLORIDA TODAY’s Rob Landers brings you some of today’s top stories on the News in 90 Seconds for Sept. 24.

Florida Today

Brevard County reported two newly recorded coronavirus deaths Saturday, one of which was connected to a long-term care facility such as a nursing home or assisted-living facility, data from the Florida Department of Health show.

So far, the county has lost 293 people to the virus, with 83 deaths were reported this month.

At least 178 deaths were connected to long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, up one from the previous day.

Brevard also added 72 new COVID-19 cases to its total of 8,800 — 8,773 residents and 27 nonresidents affected.

Here are details on the two deaths reported Saturday:

•A 75-year-old man who had contact with another confirmed case. It is unknown if his case was travel-related. His positive test was first recorded by the state on Aug. 4.

•A 76-year-old woman who had contact with another confirmed case. Her case was not travel-related. Her positive test was first recorded by the state on Aug. 7.

It’s important to note the exact dates of these deaths are not made public by the department of health. Often there is a lag between the person’s death and when it is reported by the Florida Department of Health. Also, a “case” is a person who tests positive for the first time, according to FDOH.

The total number of people tested in Brevard was 105,496 (96,637 testing negative), for a cumulative positive percentage rate of 8.34%. FDOH county report show on Friday 1,259 people tested negative, and there was a percent positive of 5.41% for new cases here. The median age of those testing positive here is 44. The median age statewide is 40.

FDOH data show 791 Florida residents have been hospitalized in Brevard since the pandemic began, up five from the previous day.

In total, 4,004 males and 4,765 females have tested positive for coronavirus.

According to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Brevard had 59 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in its seven major hospitals, up eight from the previous day. Of the 1,302 total staffed hospital bed capacity, 28% of beds were available in those hospitals. Of the 167 total adult ICU bed capacity, 25% were available.
