The Gut-Brain Connect And Mental Health

October 12, 2020

| Health Magazine

A documentary that looks at how everything is closely connected has an episode on poop, tracing its journey from the human body to its place of final disposal. Interestingly, the narrator-reporter, talking to the person in-charge of the sewage disposal unit in London, remarks excitedly that this unit with its myriad pipes and canals was actually an extension of the human alimentary canal! From here, it journeys on in more canals and pipes to its final destination. And in the process, all poops become free of identities, merging as one. Including those of queen and commoner. That’s a metaphysical view, so to speak.

Amazingly, between the alimentary canal and the brain, a lot of stuff goes on. Sometimes our emotions and behaviour may be orchestrated by trillions of bacteria that reside in those winding tracts, propelling us to be what we are. The term ‘gut feeling’ comes from here, perhaps,

Calls to mental health hotline have more than doubled

October 12, 2020

| Health Magazine

Part of the awareness drive is knowing where to get the appropriate intervention. Several hotlines offering mental health counseling are available to anyone who needs to talk things through. The Philippine Psychiatric Association likewise launched Mind Matters, which offers free consultations for frontliners weighing against the mental strain of COVID-19’s demands.

By Patricia B. Mirasol

The National Center for Mental Health’s hotline has received an average of 876 calls per month between March to August this year, up from the pre-pandemic average of 350, said Dr. Rodney Boncajes, a psychiatrist at the said hospital, in a recent mental health forum organized by J&J Philippines, Inc.

Individuals have been responding to coronavirus stress in different ways, including panic, anxiety, and distress. There has also been an increase in the number of web searches for depression while under quarantine.

The biggest problem, according to Dr. Amadeo Alinea Jr., president of the Philippine

Mercury, which bought the former owner of the magazines Bauer Media (now known as ARE Media) in July, shut down eight titles including NW, OK! and Elle to avoid signing long-term licensing deals with international publishing houses to save money.

Harper’s Bazaar had five months left to run on its contract with Bauer, while Men’s Health and Women’s Health contracts were expiring later this year. All three titles are licensed from Hearst Magazines in the US.

Hearst has been talking to multiple parties about deals that would allow the magazines to continue to be published in Australia. Negotiations were still underway last week. Industry sources who spoke on the

Paragon Media is a special interest publisher that prints titles such as Australian Men’s Fitness and Ecogeneration. Paragon chief executive Ian Brooks confirmed the talks and said he was hopeful of finalising the deal.

“Men’s Health and Women’s Health are the strongest health and fitness brands in Australia and we have long recognised their unique value as a channel for advertisers,” he said. “These mastheads, in an expanded print and digital ecosystem, will continue to be important in this segment and we are hopeful that discussions can be concluded.”

Brag Media, the new publisher of Rolling Stone Australia, will also launch a new magazine in the next few weeks. It is unclear whether it will be a former title from ARE Media. ARE Media staff are currently de-commissioning Harper’s Bazaar while Hearst continues talks with prospective buyers.

Before closure, Harper’s Bazaar, which was printed for more

‘I gave up veganism and my health improved instantly’

When people don’t listen to the experts

Dietician Jane Clarke accepts that cutting down on meat can be beneficial for health, but is concerned by veganism’s wholesale promotion by bloggers, rather than health experts.

“It’s great that there is now a much wider range of non-meat sources of protein, but the power of social media and supermarkets to influence our food choices needs to be combined with scientific evidence,” she warns, adding that the trend for highly processed vegan food with lots of sugar, fats and salt added to make them tasty shows “you can easily be unhealthy as a vegan”.

Clarke says the evidence still points to the health benefits of a balanced diet – including a limited amount of animal protein and dairy. Research recently published in the journal BMC Medicine found the lowest mortality rates in those eating up to 80g meat a day. “Calcium-rich foods including

N.W.T. teens receive $25K to keep publishing magazine dedicated to Inuvialuit youth

October 11, 2020

| Health Magazine

When childhood friends Cassidy Lennie-Ipana and Mataya Gillis began their Inuvialuit youth magazine Nipaturuq a year ago, they had no clue they would now be working on its fourth edition.

Gillis, 16, from Inuvik, N.W.T., said it all started when the two took part in the Inuvialuit Living History Project, when they travelled to Ivvavik National Park and had to complete a project in the summer of 2019.

“We thought it would just be this little fake magazine,” Gillis said. “We had no feeling that it was going to be big.”

Now the magazine just landed $25,000 in funding from Canadian Roots Exchange to continue publishing.

Gillis said part of the reason they continued is they started to see the impact of the magazine, which focuses on Inuvialuit youth.

“People just seemed really interested in it and we thought, wow, this could make such a big difference because it’s

Alan Titchmarsh health latest: Love Your Garden presenter on backache from gardening

October 11, 2020

| Health Magazine

Spending decades leant over, tending to shrubbery and flowers, has left Alan Titchmarsh with a bad back. Do you have one too? Here’s what you can do about it.

Situated in Hampshire, with his beloved wife Alison, Alan is surrounded by nature.

At 71 years old, there could be no other place he’d rather be – especially when the grandchildren come over.

“I live in a spot which is beautiful and which I hope I’ve made more beautiful,” he told Wise Living Magazine earlier this year.

“Beautifying the earth on whatever scale is the most glorious privilege,” he continued.

Yet, with all that beauty, Alan has had to pay a price. “I get a bit of backache from 60 years of gardening,” he admitted.

However, his passion for horticulture hasn’t dwindled. “I’m in my garden every day when I’m not away,” he added.

“The problem is that when you love
