This is the first of a three part series analyzing public health infrastructure in the United States. This introduction analyzes the governing bodies of US public health and why they are not getting the job done.

Covid-19 exposed the failures of our government in the United States. The US government has not succeeded in protecting the health of its residents—its response to the epidemic has been disjointed, poorly coordinated and, in many regions of the country, largely ineffective. While the federal government has played a central and important role in research and in the development of Covid-19 drugs and vaccines, messages coming from the White House and its supporters across government and from

LGBTQ+ young people face higher rates of sexual health issues, bullying, and sexual violence, in … [+] part due to a lack of inclusive sex education policies.

In September, the Texas Board of Education rejected a proposed sex education curriculum that would have taught middle and high school students about sexual orientation and gender identity. If the final vote in November doesn’t reverse that decision, advocates say it could have significant health consequences for young people.

Ruben Cortez, a Brownsville Democrat, introduced the proposal in part because he has a personal connection to the topic. “One of my children this summer came out to us and the fact that she had to bottle that in for years thinking that we wouldn’t accept her,” he said, according to the Texas Tribune. “It’s difficult to imagine what other students who don’t live in a tolerant house would go through if

Your access to walkable spaces, the fresh food options you have and ultimately your life expectancy will largely be determined by where you live, but to understand why and to improve people’s lives, you have to go beyond geography.

That’s the message that Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, the dean of Atlanta’s Morehouse School of Medicine and a Harvard University-trained physician, conveyed to faculty, staff and students at UC Davis Health in a Facebook forum marking October as Global Diversity Month.

“We’ve figured out that just going into a community and telling people what they should be doing is not enough to expect that people are going to respond and change their lifestyle,” Montgomery Rice said. “We needed policies that would lead to sustainability, particularly in those areas where we had the lowest life expectancy and that were influenced by psychological barriers.”

She joined Gary

“Man Enough,” the New Zealand version of Australian documentary format “Man Up,” which tackles male mental health issues, is due to land on TVNZ 1 this month.

Fronted by “Celebrity Treasure Island” host Matt Chisholm, the series (2 x 44′) is backed by men’s health charity Movember and was produced by Wellington-based production outfit Gibson Group during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the series, Chisolm sets out on a personal journey into the world of masculinity, on a mission to break the silence around male suicide and challenge ideas about what it means to be a modern man. He visits rugby clubs, construction sites, boardrooms, men’s barbershops and boxing gyms, asking whether men can be “man enough” to open up.

U.K.-based independent factual distributor TVF International is launching both “Man Enough” and “Man Up” globally this week at the virtual Mipcom market. TVF International acquisitions manager Julian Chou-Lambert acquired the original

Do Pets Improve Mental Health During COVID Lockdowns?

In response to the social isolation associated with COVID-19, lots of people are taking the advice of those like fellow Psychology Today blogger Catherine Sanderson, who described “5 Great Reasons to Adopt a Dog During The Pandemic.” Animal shelters all over the United States have experienced a run on adoptions of dogs and cats. In April, for example, Chicago’s Animal Care and Control shelter completely ran out of adoptable animals for the first time.

But is there solid evidence that getting a pet will actually cure the COVID blues? Months ago researchers who study human-animal interactions began posting online questionnaires to answer this question. In June, a group of researchers reported that 70% of the 4,000 dog owners they surveyed agreed their pets helped them cope with loneliness and depression caused by the pandemic. The participants also reported increases in positive emotions such as

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia and his Republican opponent, Daniel Gade, sparred over how best to respond to the coronavirus and other health care issues Tuesday in their third and final debate.

The televised event, sponsored by the AARP, focused heavily on the pandemic as well as issues important to seniors, like prescription drug prices and the Affordable Care Act. Warner, a former governor, cast himself as a trusted problem solver.

“The truth is, what I’m counting on most, is that Virginians knows me,” Warner said.

Gade, a first-time candidate and retired Army officer who lost a leg when his Humvee was blown up in Iraq, offered himself up as an energetic fresh face unafraid of special interests.

“One you look at my personal history, you’ll know this: I will never quit when things are hard,” Gade said.

By MARY CLARE JALONICK, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett faced her first day’s worth of questions Tuesday from Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and it was a calmer affair than other recent confirmation hearings.

With public attendance limited by the coronavirus pandemic and Democrats staying focused on a health care message just three weeks ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election, the back and forth was serious, disciplined and mostly uninterrupted — save a few technical glitches from those participating virtually.

But similar to past hearings, Barrett avoided taking positions on a variety of subjects and rulings, saying it would be inappropriate to do so.

Takeaways from day two of the confirmation hearing:

PROHIBITED FROM EXPRESSING VIEWS

Barrett repeatedly declined to give her personal views, or to preview how she might rule, on key issues that could become before the court.

Tamera Mowry-Housley says that exercising amid the coronavirus pandemic has made her feel so much better — and not just physically.

“Exercise and moving my body really helped me mentally once the pandemic was upon us,” says Mowry-Housley, 42, who is teaming up with Zumba to encourage everyone to make time for a mental and physical break – a Zumba Break – ahead of World Mental Health Day on Saturday.

Explaining that she has been dealing with “a lot of stress and anxiety” during the health crisis, the actress says that staying fit has boosted her mental health.

“When we all had to be quarantined for so long, I really discovered the importance of diving back into exercising now that I had the time,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively.
