October 14, 2020
| Health Center

The Northeast Health District added 83 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and, for the first time in a week, no new deaths attributed to the disease. The seven-day rolling averages of both cases and deaths were unchanged from Monday.

Every county in the 10-county Northeast Health District added at least one case with the release of the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report, with Oconee County adding five cases and Clarke County adding 24.

The District added 83 cases on Tuesday of last week, so the seven-day rolling average on Tuesday was 83.3, exactly the same as on Monday.

The seven-day rolling average a week ago was 75.9. It isn’t clear that the number of cases of COVID-19 are increasing, but it is quite clear that the drop in cases has been halted and cases, at a minimum, are at a plateau.

A week ago, the Department

Alliant Testing

MADISON, Wis. – Following a temporary closure and slowdown at the Alliant Energy Center’s COVID-19 testing site Tuesday afternoon, Public Health Madison & Dane County recommended other options for those seeking tests that day.

In general, the health agency is asking people to consider the time, place and reason they’re getting tested.

“A lot of people do think the Alliant Energy Center is the first place to get tested,” Director of Testing Ken Van Horn said. “We always know that the first day of the week is a busy day, then today we had the added complication of our electronic registration system just didn’t work for about the first hour we were here today, and that caused a pretty big backup.”

PHMDC staff had to use a backup paper registration system

Dr. Jeffrey Gold, UNMC’s chancellor, said the center will be the “linchpin” of many of the education and training activities that will take place at UNMC over the next half-century.

”This facility — and the professionals and technology within it — have been and will continue to be life-changing for the health professionals who train here,” he said.

The center includes plenty of technology, from the holographic images lining the entryway to the three-story SONY Infinity Wall, the largest display of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, in the atrium. It also features a holographic theater, touted as the first in an academic institution, and Laser CAVE-5, a five-sided fully immersive virtual reality suite.

But it also includes replica health care settings,

Days after news of a federal inmate’s death due to the coronavirus at the Southern Nevada Detention Center in Pahrump, the private company that operates the facility announced a staff member also has died.

CoreCivic, which runs the federal detention center, confirmed the staff member’s death in an emailed response to questions from the Review-Journal on Tuesday. A detention officer died on Sunday “due to potential COVID-19 related issues,” spokesman Ryan Gustin said in the statement.

On Friday, the Nevada federal public defender’s office announced that 29-year-old Brandon Patton, an inmate at the detention center, had died of the coronavirus. The U.S. Marshals Service later confirmed Patton’s death.

Patton was the first known inmate housed in Nevada to die of COVID-19.

The Pahrump facility is the only federal detention center in the state. The Department of Corrections, which operates state prisons, has not had any staff members or prisoners die

The rematch between Democratic U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne and former GOP Congressman David Young in many ways is a rerun of their fight over Obamacare. They also have argued over Axne missing votes due to late flights and the disruptions of COVID-19.

Axne has hammered Young repeatedly for voting while he was in the House to dismantle Obamacare, threatening tp take away insurance coverage for many and protection for those with preexisting conditions. Young says he always supported protecting those with preexisting conditions and pushed for a replacement for Obamacare that would include those protections and more individual choice on coverage.

Young has repeatedly suggested he should get his seat back because he never missed a vote, and Axne has. “I showed up to every county (in the district) for
