TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) –

Dancing is something people from all over the world enjoy.

Aside from the fun of letting go and grooving to the music, there are many health benefits that go along with this activity like weight loss, lowered blood pressure and circulation.

But cardiologist says there is one health benefit that helps the entire body.

“Make those hips gyrate a little. One of the best reasons to raise your heart rate and exercise. I put dance as an exercise is actually brain health,” says Dr. Kahn.

Retired teacher, Jo Jo Perkin started taking dance lessons about a year ago after a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder diagnosis.

“I began dancing as therapy. It was recommended to me, because it was something I always wanted to do, ” says Perkin.

Perkin enjoys dancing so much she’s started organizing and hosting dances to share her passion with the community.

Cheek: Technology the key to better health care for rural Texans – Opinion – Amarillo Globe-News

October 7, 2020

| Better Health

Texas has a rural health care disparity.

This means that 75 percent of our counties are federally designated health professional shortage areas. There simply aren’t enough doctors and nurses. Sixty-four of our counties lack a hospital, and 25 counties have no primary care physician. In short, rural health care disparity in our state means some 3 million Texans struggle to access the care they need.

Addressing the health gap facing our medically underserved areas would start with increased education about the benefits of checkups and procedures, better health care access, and expanded affordability. We also must find ways to combat the persistent, systemic disadvantages that often serve as a barrier to quality care.

This is an enormously complex problem without an easy solution. The best approach is to focus on one health care issue at a time where progress can be made. Improving our ability to screen more Texans for

For Black Americans, Resilience Key to Heart Health

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 7, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Black people who have a strong sense of psychological well-being may have better heart health, a new study indicates.

It suggests that feelings of optimism and a sense of purpose and control — hallmarks of psychosocial resilience — are more important to heart health than where people live, researchers said.

Lead researcher Tené Lewis, an associate professor at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, noted that differences in heart health between Black and white Americans have been documented for decades. But individual factors affecting Black Americans have not been well understood.

“Almost everything we know about Black Americans and their health focuses on deficits, yet we really need to begin to identify strengths,” she said. “Understanding which strengths matter most for Black Americans — and under which contexts — will allow

Optimism, resilience may guard heart health in Black adults

October 7, 2020

| Better Health

Optimism, a sense of purpose and feeling in control are a recipe for better heart health among Black adults, even in neighborhoods where heart disease and stroke are more common, a new study shows.

Researchers looked into how psychosocial well-being, or resilience, affected health. They found that in neighborhoods with high rates of people having or dying from heart disease or stroke, Black adults with higher resilience scores had a 12.5% lower rate of cardiovascular disease than those with lower resilience.

Living in a neighborhood with fewer or limited socioeconomic resources is recognized as a social determinant of health, the conditions in which people are born and live that could impact a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease.

“Almost everything we know about Black Americans and their health focuses on deficits, yet we really need to begin to identify strengths,” one of the study’s principal investigators, Tené T. Lewis, said in

| Better Health

Apple continues to develop its plans for digital health. It has now begun introducing its innovative Health Records feature within the Health app for iPhone users in the UK and Canada.

Growing support for Health Records

In excess of 500 U.S. institutions comprising 11,000 care locations already support Health Records on the iPhone, which let users securely (and privately) view and store their medical records on their device.

Now, those hospitals have been joined by others within the UK’s Oxford University Hospitals group and Women’s College Hospital in Canada. Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust UK) and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Mackenzie Health (Canada) also now offer the service.

Making health info useful

Apple developed Health Records to solve real problems with this valuable information. Migrating medical records to digital processes posed multiple problems around privacy protection and regulation, and initial attempts to do so generated a bit

Massive Consolidations Taking Place Across Health Care, Especially Among Private Practices | News

| Better Health

PALM BEACH, Fla., Oct. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — In the U.S., family physicians are front-line caregivers to people from different socioeconomic backgrounds in urban and rural areas across the 50 states. One in every five office physician visits is made to a family physician which accounts for around 192 million visits annually. Family physicians are an integral part of the rural primary care system and the U.S. healthcare system relies, in a major way, on primary care doctors to lower the overall Medicare spending. Government bodies have realized the importance of primary care physicians in developing a value-based healthcare system in the U.S. and have undertaken various initiatives to bridge these gaps between revenues of different specialties. These initiatives are anticipated to empower primary care physicians to spend more time with patients rather than performing other administrative work.  A report from Grand View Research predicts that the U.S. primary

Equality Health Embeds Social Determinants of Health in Care Delivery

October 7, 2020

Phoenix-based Equality Health gathers social determinant data at primary care practices to connect patients with social services.

Equality Health has included addressing social determinants of health in the health system’s care delivery system, with primary care practices playing a leading role.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) such as housing, food security, and transportation can have a pivotal impact on the physical and mental health of patients. By making direct investments in initiatives designed to address social determinants and working with community partners, healthcare organizations can help their patients in profound ways beyond the traditional provision of medical services.

“The model for our delivery of healthcare incorporates social determinants and a cultural approach to care. For us, social determinants are not a standalone project. That is a key element of the success that we have seen so far. It is not a bolt-on program. We are not doing it to be
