Michigan could lift ban on food assistance for drug felons

September 30, 2020

| Health Food

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The lifetime ban from receiving food benefits for those with more than one drug-related felony conviction could be lifted under a bill that passed the Michigan Senate on Wednesday.

The current law punishes offenders long after they’ve served their sentences and increases the chance they will commit more crimes, according to supporters of the legislation. Federal law allows states to permanently ban residents with drug-related felonies from receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

The bill now goes to the House. If signed into law, Michigan would join 26 other states in lifting the ban, according to the Michigan League for Public Policy, which supports the bill.

Drug users can’t rehabilitate without access to a healthy meal, the bill’s sponsor Sen. Jim Ananich, a Flint Democrat, said in a media release.

“Holding food assistance out of reach as a way to continue penalizing those who have already

TikTok videos, Facebook Trump ads spread misinformation concerning Biden’s health

September 30, 2020

| Health Facts

And on the video platform TikTok, four grainy videos alleging that Biden was wearing a wire to “cheat” during the debate racked up more than half a million combined views on Wednesday, according to research by the left-leaning media watchdog group Media Matters. One of the videos shows a still of Biden with his hand inside his suit, while another overlays an arrow over Biden’s tie, but neither video shows any visual evidence of Biden wearing an electronic device of any kind.

Tech companies have long struggled with misinformation and are on high-alert going into the election. Ahead of the debate, Twitter and Facebook executives reviewed hashtags, trends, and other accounts that may break the companies’ rules using a combination of software and human review. The companies are also pushing out accurate information about how to register to vote to millions of people.

But the latest evidence shows that they

Whoever goes through will face Everton at Wembley on 1 November after the Toffees beat Birmingham City 3-0.

United States midfielder Lavelle has yet to play for Man City since arriving in August with a minor ankle injury.

But manager Gareth Taylor hopes to give a debut “over the next couple of games” to the 25-year-old World Cup winner.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma remains among the worst states in the United States for positive coronavirus tests per 100,000 people and the number of new reported cases, according to a report released this week by the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

Oklahoma is in the red zone for virus cases, meaning 101 or more new cases per 100,000 population, with a rate of 201 new cases per 100,000, an increase of 15% from a week ago, according to the federal report dated Sept. 27 and released Wednesday by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. The report recommends increased testing to identify those with COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus, and to isolate those infected to limit the spread of the virus.

“Abbott BinaxNOW supplies (a rapid test for the virus) will be distributed in the coming weeks; develop (a) plan for weekly surveillance in critical populations to monitor

Trump’s Abdication on Health Care

September 30, 2020

| Health Magazine

But this makes the politics a worst-of-both-worlds scenario for the White House. By backing the suit, it opens itself up to the attack prior to the election that it will eliminate protections for preexisting conditions, without having any realistic chance of winning when the court takes up the case after the election.

It would help at least to have a plan, and that’s Trump’s instinct. But his supposedly imminent health care plan has become as meaningful as the various versions of “infrastructure week.”

Coming up with a health care plan should be something within his control. It’s not like, say, promising to create 10 million jobs, a pledge that would depend on circumstances not fully under any president’s control. Drafting a plan, at bottom, requires only a consensus among some wonks, a word-processing program and a printer.

No one would have bet at the outset that the administration would have

Bed-Stuy ZIP Code Added To City Watchlist For Coronavirus Growth

September 30, 2020

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — A ZIP code covering Bed-Stuy has been added to a list of areas where city health officials are worried about an increase in coronavirus cases, the health department said Wednesday.

The 11205 ZIP code — which stretches over Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and an eastern portion of Bed-Stuy — is one of seven neighborhoods where the coronavirus test positivity rate has been on the rise, and recently reached between 2 and 3 percent.

The seven neighborhoods were added Wednesday to the Health Department’s areas of concern, though they have not yet reached the “alarming” rate of 10 New York City neighborhoods where positivity rates have spiked above 3 percent.

Those 10 Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods, now including Fresh Meadows/Hilcrest, are part of coronavirus clusters that have prompted a ramp up in testing and enforcement of coronavirus rules in the last week.

The city’s overall 14-day positivity rate

The race for a coronavirus vaccine

Dr. Nicole Saphier, author of ‘Make America Healthy Again;’ Dr. Dyan Hes, pediatrician; and Dr. Kathleen Berchelmann, pediatrician, join ‘Fox and Friends.’

More than 1,700 health care workers have died of COVID-19 and related complications — after many of them said they didn’t have adequate personal protective equipment, according to the country’s largest nurses union.

The report released by National Nurses United also found health care workers of color have been disproportionately affected by deaths and infections and there’s been a serious undercount of figures nationwide.

“While this figure for all health care workers is higher than has been reported elsewhere, National Nurses United (NNU) believes it is a conservative estimate. These cases have been documented by NNU using media reports, social media, obituaries, union memorials, federal and state reporting, and NNU internal reporting,” the report states.
